Russell will be one of 65 players invited to the combine, and is one of four players representing the Big South in the combine that commences on Jan. 10 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

CONWAY, S.C.- Senior Kyle Russell (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) has been selected to participate in the 2009 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine, the MLS announced recently. Russell has been a lynchpin in the Coastal Carolina defense the past four seasons He leaves the program tied for eighth in career matches started (74) and is one of only 10 Chants in program history to play in at least 78 career games. A two-time All-Big South selection, he was also named to the Big South All-Tournament team, as well as the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott All-Tournament team in his senior season. In his final season as a Chanticleer, Russell showed true durability, as he was one of three Chants to start all 21 contests.

The senior defender is one of 65 college seniors from 45 schools to be selected for the combine. Russell, along with Big South Player of the Year Daniel Revivo of and Otto Lowey of Winthrop and Liberty’s Joshua Boateng are the four players representing the Big South Conference. Other conferences such as the Southern Conference and Atlantic Sun had two players selected.

Russell is the fourth player in program history to be invited to the combine, as alums Joseph Ngewnya, Mubarike Chisoni and Boyzzz Khumalo were also selected in past seasons. Ngwenya made the most of his opportunity, as was selected third overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The South Elgin, Ill. native will look to become the fifth Chanticleer to play in Major League Soccer, and become the third active player in the league for the 2009 season (Kheli Dube, New England Revolution, Boyzzz Khumalo, D.C. United).

The coaching and management staffs of all 15 MLS teams will be in attendance to scout talent at the 2009 adidas MLS Player Combine, which concludes two days before the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. At the 2008 MLS SuperDraft 43 of the 56 players drafted participated in the 2008 adidas MLS Player Combine; 12 combine players were selected in the first round. The 2009 MLS SuperDraft will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009 in St. Louis, Mo.

The initial player list was determined by a select panel of Division I college coaches representing all conferences who nominated and voted for players in conjunction with MLS coaches. Youth players from the Generation adidas program will join additional collegiate players from NCAA Division II and III schools, NAIA schools and Division I alternates to finalize the 2009 adidas Player Combine. The final player list and team assignments will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 2009 adidas MLS Player Combine will separate all players into four teams and feature two games per day at Lockhart Stadium on Jan. 10, 11 and 13 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Eastern men's soccer team is beginning to see more and more stars each season.

St. Charles North Stars that is.

The Panthers have gotten three players from the west Chicago suburb soccer powerhouse during the past two seasons including red-shirt freshman defender Mitch Welsch, freshman midfielder Mike Picinich and freshman defender Austin Andrekus.

One of the main reasons players from that area are making the trip to Charleston is because former Eastern men's soccer player, Eric Willson, is the coach of the North Stars.

"(Wilson) has done a good job of developing the program," said Eastern head coach Adam Howarth.

Howarth said the St. Charles North team has attended the Panthers' summer camp the last couple of years and that has helped in recruiting and getting to know the players.

The North Stars have been a force in the Upstate Eight Conference, winning three straight regional titles and reaching the Illinois High School Association Class AA state quarterfinals in the 2006-07 season.

Andrekus said he decided to play at Eastern this past summer. He said Willson was instrumental in talking to Eastern's coaches for him and pointing him in the Panthers' direction.

Welsch said he was influenced by his coach to come to Eastern.

"We went to the Eastern summer soccer camp the year before I committed," Welsch said. "He told me about the school and the campus, and it sounded pretty promising."

Picinich said Willson pushed the players to come to Eastern because he knew it would be a good fit for them.

Picinich said his familiarity with players he had known and players he had met during the summer were a main factor in coming to the Panthers.

The North Stars have a similar style of play to that of Eastern, so the players said the transition from high school to college was an easy one for them.

"The only thing you have to get used to is the guys," Picinich said. "Position-wise it has been pretty familiar with me. It is the same idea so it has not been too hard."

Picinich said he is glad he chose to come to Eastern and playing with former high school teammates has been a great experience.

"It is very comfortable," Picinich said. "You know how they play because you have been playing with them so long. You are pretty familiar with their style."

Welsch said because he is a year older he did not get to play with Andrekus and Picinich as long as they had played together, but said it was nice to have his former teammates at Eastern.

Sophomore forward Darby Kehoe played against St. Charles North several times in high school because he played for rival St. Charles East High School.

He said he did not know any of the players on a personal level but remembered they were good players when he faced them.

Howarth said each of the three players from St. Charles North brings something different to the team.

"Welsch is coming off of an injury last season, but he has been playing really well and will be pushing for playing time," Howarth said. "Andrekus has been very impressive and will probably red-shirt this season."

Picinich, the only North Star currently starting for the Panthers, has been a huge addition to the Panthers with his combination of speed and quickness, according to Howarth.
